Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the Sampler Device?

Inside Sample Packs that are using the DecentSampler format you can find an User Manual .PDF file that explains how to use the multisamples.

In short what you have to do is:

  1. Download the Sample Pack you wish to use from the sampl.me store.
  2. Save the folder in it's entirety in the folder on your computer where you keep your samples.
  3. Go to the DecentSampler website and download the .vst installer.
  4. Install the plugin in your preferred location, following the install-guide upon opening.
  5. Open DecentSampler inside your DAW and click "Load" on the top right of the device.
  6. Navigate to the file folder where you moved the Sample Pack.
  7. Now select one of the .dspreset files inside the folder and the sampl.me Sampler Device will open. You have to do this each time you wish to open the Device or switch presets.

For a more detailed installation guide with screenshots we'd like to refer you to the User Manual that is included in every sampl.me Sample Pack.

Why should I use the Sampler Device?

The Sampler Device allows you to play back the multisamples directly from the VST plugin and is a CPU-friendly and free software. The device has all the usual suspects like a Lowpass Filter, Highpass Filter, Envelopes for the Amplitude, Envelopes for the Lowpass Filter, LFO’s for the Filter, Amplitude and Pitch, as well as the option to connect MIDI Velocity to the Amplitude.
But of course, we built in some extra’s…

  • Full Polyphony
  • Semi-Analog Chorus Effect
  • Convolution Reverbs
  • Delay

What is meant with "Analog Chorus" in the Sampler Device?

When we designed the Sampler Device for sampl.me, we wanted to include some useful features not found on similar products. A big reason why we are sampling analog synthesizers is to be able to play the synthesizer polyphonically, meaning you can play back multiple notes at the same time.

We quickly realized we could record each note multiple times allowing you to play back the notes in a chorus/unison-like way. For some of the Synth Patches we therefore recorded each note 3 times and the Chorus Amount knob in the Sampler Device allows you to mix in the 2nd and 3rd voice, which are panned left and right. The Width knob allows you to dial in the amount of panning. The voices on the sides are also being modulated by an LFO that changes the pitch. The rate and depth of the LFO's are based on the circuit of the Roland Juno 60 Synthesizer which is famous for its chorus sound. To top it off we've included a switch which sets the total voices to 5, adding each extra voice to the opposite side and modulated with a different speed and depth as well as delaying each voice slightly.

How do I know which samples are pre-mixed?

Inside sampl.me Sample Packs you will find folders with samples. These are generally recorded straight from analog hardware without any additional processing.

  • For some synth patches the levels of each note are adapted to make for a smoother playback.
  • All Drum Samples are normalized to -3dB peak level.
  • Some samples are inside folders which are named (Processed). These samples are processed further with both analog equipment and digital effects. The levels of these samples are not normalized, although none of them will peak over -3dB.

The Processed sounds are thus the ones that are pre-mixed which means the levels of each sound is in the ballpark of where you would have them in a mix (yes, this is highly dependent on style and genre, bear with me), and most importantly they are compressed in a way that accentuates the transients and tails in a pleasant way so you don't have to worry about compressing the samples a lot more. We've decided to do this to help you quickly get into the ballpark of a working mix and only have to worry about the effects you'd like to add rather than fixing the dynamics. A lot of online samples have really bad dynamics and they make your mix sound flat and dull. These samples are carefully tuned to help you make more expressive music!
